Entitlement has been long discussed by philosophers and ordinary people alike. Do you think people receive what they truly deserve? People commit the right actions expecting to be rewarded in the end. Some people do evil things aware that they can be punish for their wicked actions. In a perfect world that’s how things supposed to work. But we all know that’s how things happen.
Whenever you found a wallet full of money and return it to the owner, you are expecting that you’re going to obtain a reward for your honesty. The funny thing is that if you’ll do that nowadays, you’ll receive a thank you certainly but rewards, doubtful.
Even during at school, students expect that they will get good results on the subjects they have studied for and also assume to get poor results on the ones they just skimmed on. Astonishingly, they’ve got great results on the tests they know a little of and got passable results on the subject they studied on.
At work, we all work hard to obtain promotions and raises and extra bonuses; however, lots of people worthy of promotions have been overlooked and the most attentive employees are laid off.
The point here is that although we think that we deserve more, it is probable that will get a totally different result.
One good example of a poker entitlement would be Phil Hellmuth. He is known for his declaration, “If it wasn’t for luck, I guess I’d win them all.” This individual deems that having a good game plan give him the right to win. These days he acknowledge that luck has a part in the game but it won’t be denied that he still believes that a weak hand will be crushed by a strong one every time.
This view makes Phil not take into account the other factors vital in the game. One good instance would be his outburst against poker pro Adam “Roothlus” Levy during the 2025 WSOP Main Event. This situation happens right at the start of the game where both players have deep stacks. Hellmuth raise with 99 and then Levy called with QTs. As the game progress, Phil hit a set with a 9 but Levy got the nut straight. Obviously, Phil loses in the game and then rant against Levy and belittled his game play. The reality is that Levy gave an outstanding play: Hellmuth was so distracted because of his discomfort for having the best hand by having the set but still end up loosing. This instance makes him permit to ignore the game in general because of his sense of entitlement.
They were both having deep stacks, Levy is in position and Phil has a loose reputation. Phil mentioned at his river bet if he’s good enough to play QT. It just means that his range can possible take in QT but he still called Levy an idiot for playing the same hand.
Being a good poker player means leaving all your sense of entitlement behind. All you need to do is to put your money in a worthwhile hand and then let the chips fall in. It is usual that your good hands will undermine a better end and your poor cards will yield better results, but it will be even out in the end.
The only thing you are entitled with in a poker table is to be dealt with cards. And then all the outcomes will depend on the decisions you make during the game and of course a little brush of fate. Nevertheless, you’re decision making will be the turning point in the end, luck will determine when you win.
